The LIR National Academy of Dramatic Art,

Trinity College Dublin

I recently had the privilege of leading an Advanced Mural Art class for the gifted third-year Scenic Art students at The LIR. This immersive course was designed to take students from concept to completion, equipping them not just with technical skills, but with the confidence to create bold, large-scale visual stories.

Throughout the course, we explored the art and craft of mural painting, focusing on storytelling through visuals, composition, and the power of collaboration in large-scale projects. Students mastered key upscaling techniques such as the grid method and projector-based transfers, skills essential for executing murals with precision and scale.

But our sessions went beyond the brush. I also introduced the business side of art: how to freelance, price projects fairly, market themselves effectively, and build strong client relationships. We worked with digital mockups to present mural proposals professionally, an essential tool for communicating vision with clarity and impact.

By the end of the course, these emerging artists had not only completed stunning final works, but also gained the tools to launch their careers, whether as muralists, scenic artists, designers, or creative entrepreneurs.

It was an inspiring journey to witness, and I’m truly excited to see where their talent and drive take them next.
